The Great Wildebeest Migration
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles on Earth, a dramatic, circular journey of over 1.5 million wildebeests accompanied by zebras, gazelles, and other animals across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. Taking place between Tanzania and Kenya, this epic migration is a true marvel of nature, filled with drama, danger, and beauty. If you're dreaming of witnessing this awe-inspiring event, timing and location are everything. Below is a breakdown of the migration route, month by month, so you can plan your safari at the perfect time.

🐃🐃 Nature’s Most Spectacular Show
🌱 January to March – Calving Season (Southern Serengeti, Tanzania)
The migration begins in the rich, grassy plains of the Ndutu region and southern Serengeti, where the herds settle to graze and give birth. Around 500,000 calves are born during this time, making it a haven for predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas who take advantage of the vulnerable young.Best place to visit: Ndutu Plains, Southern Serengeti
Highlights: Calving season, predator action, great for photographers
Best months: January, February, March
April to May – Movement Towards Central Serengeti
As the rains fade and the grass becomes depleted, the herds begin to move northwest toward Central Serengeti and Moru Kopjes, forming impressive columns of wildebeest stretching across the plains. This is a quieter time in terms of tourism, offering a more peaceful experience.Best place to visit: Central Serengeti
Highlights: Huge herds on the move, beautiful green landscapes
Best months: April, May
June – Grumeti River Crossing (Western Corridor, Serengeti)
By June, the herds reach the Western Corridor and face the first major challenge: crossing the Grumeti River, which is home to giant Nile crocodiles. These crossings, though not as dramatic as those on the Mara River, are thrilling and less crowded.Best place to visit: Western Serengeti, Grumeti Reserve
Highlights: River crossings, crocodile ambushes, lush scenery
Best months: Late May to June
July to August – Mara River Crossing (Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara)
This is the most iconic and dramatic phase of the migration. The herds reach the Northern Serengeti and prepare to cross the Mara River into Kenya’s Masai Mara. These crossings are heart-pounding and chaotic, as wildebeests battle strong currents and waiting crocodiles.Best place to visit: Northern Serengeti (Kogatende), Masai Mara (Kenya)
Highlights: Epic river crossings, predator-prey action, best time for classic migration scenes
Best months: July, August, early September
September to October – Masai Mara Grazing
Having made it into the Masai Mara, the herds spread out across the savannah to enjoy the lush grasses. This is an excellent time for game viewing as predators are still on the hunt and the wildlife is concentrated.Best place to visit: Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya)
Highlights: Good wildlife density, fewer river crossings, dramatic predator encounters
Best months: September, October
November to December – Return to Serengeti
As the short rains begin in November, the wildebeests start their journey back south into Tanzania’s Serengeti, moving through the Lobo area and Eastern Serengeti. This stage marks the end of the cycle as the herds prepare for another round of calving in the south.Best place to visit: Eastern and Central Serengeti
Highlights: Less crowded, scenic views, transitional herds
Best months: November, December
